Vegan companion animals
© 2007 John Cheale all rights reserved You may find yourself sharing your home with an
animal. Due to the way our society uses and abuses animals theres a
lot of domesticated creatures that get abandoned when they are no
longer small and cute or get too expensive. You may find that you
are the human that can provide a home for the unwanted furry,
feathery or scaly one. If this happened to you, as it did to me,
its possible to look after an animal without slaughtering other
animals in order to feed it. Dogs are easy- lots of vegan dog food
stuffs are available and the dogs tend to thrive. Suprisingly cats
are easy too. There is a vegan dried cat food (see Veggiepets in
links section) and a supplement is available from the Vegan Society
which you can add to meals that you make yourself. The RSPB
recommends putting a bell on your cats collar in order to give
birds a chance to make their escape. I guess the constant ringing
eventually gets tuned out from consciousness for the cat.
Spaying and neutering.
Having helped out at an animal rescue sanctuary full of unwanted animals all I can say is allowing animals to breed means you contribute to the death of the 'difficult to home' adult animals. Us humans are a lousy lot for taking home cute fluffy baby animals which we then chuck out once they turn in to gawky adolescents. Spaying and neutering is not natural but then neither is domestication and slaughter.
